{"id":29184,"date":"2023-07-04T17:12:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-04T15:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/the-cala-fico-inlet\/"},"modified":"2023-07-06T11:36:50","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T09:36:50","slug":"the-cala-fico-inlet","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/the-cala-fico-inlet\/","title":{"rendered":"The Cala Fico Inlet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Cala Fico<\/strong> inlet sits on the north-western coast of the <strong>Isola del San Pietro<\/strong>, in the municipality of <strong>Carloforte<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It is a deep river inlet very similar to a Scandinavian fjord, immersed in <strong>volcanic sandstone rock<\/strong>. At the tip, we find a <strong>small beach<\/strong> with <strong>large, shiny pebbles<\/strong>. The sea water is clear and transparent, with colours ranging from green to light blue. The seabed is mainly rocky and home to numerous species of fish.<\/p>\n<p>The beach is surrounded by typical <strong>Mediterranean shrub<\/strong> bushes with reefs and rocky ravines.<\/p>\n<p>As well as its naturalistic features, <strong>Cala Fico<\/strong> is part of the <strong>LIPU avifauna Oasis<\/strong> which extends from <strong>Cala Vinagra<\/strong> to <strong>Capo Sandalo<\/strong> and was established in 1991. Indeed, this area was a sanctuary for <strong>Eleonora\u2019s Falcon<\/strong>, so called in honour of the <strong>Judge Eleanor of Arborea <\/strong>(1347-1403).<\/p>\n<p>This rare bird of prey, originally from <strong>Madagascar<\/strong>, nested on the <strong>cliffs<\/strong>, in the middle of the Mediterranean shrub bushes.<br \/>\nTradition has it that it was precisely the <strong>Judge<\/strong> who declared the <strong>falcons a protected species in Sardinia<\/strong>. This is why the name <strong>Eleonora\u2019s Falcon<\/strong> was given to the bird in her honour, and whose scientific name is <strong>Falco eleonorae<\/strong> (<em>Falco eleonorae<\/em> Gen\u00e9, 1839).<\/p>\n<p>As well as this extremely rare species, the reefs in the area are also home to <strong>kestrels<\/strong>, <strong>buzzards<\/strong> and <strong>Peregrine falcons<\/strong>.
