{"id":29177,"date":"2023-07-04T17:09:56","date_gmt":"2023-07-04T15:09:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/capo-caccia-isola-piana-marine-protected-area\/"},"modified":"2023-07-05T13:25:37","modified_gmt":"2023-07-05T11:25:37","slug":"capo-caccia-isola-piana-marine-protected-area","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/capo-caccia-isola-piana-marine-protected-area\/","title":{"rendered":"Capo Caccia &#8211; Isola Piana Marine Protected Area"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Capo Caccia \u2013 Isola Piana Marine Protected Area<\/strong> can be found to the <strong>north-west<\/strong> of <strong>Sardinia<\/strong>, in the municipality of <strong>Alghero<\/strong>, in <strong>the province of Sassari<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The marine area is cordoned off to the north by the <strong>Punta delle Gessiere<\/strong> and to the south by <strong>Capo Galera<\/strong>. The area also includes the <strong>Golfo di Porto Conte<\/strong> (where the <strong>Nature Reserve<\/strong> of the same name can be found).<\/p>\n<p>The protected area is split into three areas with different <strong>levels of protection<\/strong>: <strong>Zone A (full reserve)<\/strong> at the <strong>Punta Sant&#8217;Antonio-Cala Porto Agre<\/strong> and the western part of the <strong>Isola Piana<\/strong>; <strong>Zone B (general reserve)<\/strong> which includes the stretch of coast from <strong>Punta delle Gessiere<\/strong> as far as the <strong>Cala del Bollo<\/strong> and from the <strong>Punta del Cerchio<\/strong> to <strong>Capo Galera<\/strong>; <strong>Zone C (partial reserve)<\/strong> which completely covers the bay of <strong>Porto Conte<\/strong>. <strong>Scuba diving<\/strong> is only allowed in <strong>Zone B and C<\/strong> together with <strong>professional fishing<\/strong>. Any other kind of activity requires specific authorisation.<\/p>\n<p>The zone features <strong>limestone promontories,<\/strong> dating to the <strong>Cretaceous period<\/strong>, overlooking the sea on a precipice with imposing <strong>cliff formations<\/strong>, which reach a height of more than 300 metres at <strong>Punta Cristallo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These walls conceal different <strong>caves and cavities<\/strong>, both on the surface and underground. The most well-known is the <strong>Grotta di Nettuno<\/strong>. This well-equipped cave can be reached from land across a <strong>long stairway<\/strong> running along the cliff (<em><strong>Escala del Cabirol<\/strong><\/em>). The stairway has <strong>650 steps<\/strong> and runs from the cliff summit (at a height of <strong>110 m a.s.l.<\/strong>) as far down as the cave entrance at <strong>sea level<\/strong>. The cave can also be reached <strong>via sea<\/strong> on tourist boats which set sail from the <strong>port of Alghero<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Of the <strong>underwater cavities,<\/strong> the most famous is the <strong>Grotta di Nereo<\/strong>, currently considered the <strong>largest underground cave in the Mediterranean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>marine flora<\/strong> is characterised by the geology and geomorphology of the seabeds. Indeed, different <strong>dark algae<\/strong> and <strong>green algae<\/strong> grow on the underground <strong>limestone rocks<\/strong> of the cliffs. <strong>Red algae<\/strong> can be found in the areas subject to less intense wave motion.<\/p>\n<p>The sandy seabeds, on the other hand, are the <strong>ideal environment<\/strong> for <strong>Nepture grass<\/strong>, especially in the <strong>bay of Porto Conte<\/strong>. This grass is the ideal <em><strong>habitat<\/strong><\/em> for a number of species of <strong>fish<\/strong>, <strong>shellfish<\/strong> and <strong>crustaceans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>coastal areas<\/strong> and the <strong>hinterland<\/strong>, protected by the establishment of the <strong>Porto Conte regional nature reserve<\/strong>, have a typical <strong>Mediterranean shrub vegetation<\/strong>, which alternates with <strong>forest formations<\/strong> and the presence of <strong>holm oak<\/strong>. A typical example can be seen at <strong>Punta Giglio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the marine protected area, regular <strong>environmental training<\/strong> is carried out,\u00a0aimed at all those using the area, focusing on <strong>marine-coastal environmental awareness<\/strong> and <strong>environmental protection matters<\/strong>.
