{"id":29120,"date":"2023-06-21T17:01:15","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T15:01:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/state-archive-in-cagliari\/"},"modified":"2023-06-21T17:01:15","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T15:01:15","slug":"state-archive-in-cagliari","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/state-archive-in-cagliari\/","title":{"rendered":"State Archive in Cagliari"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>State Archive in Cagliari<\/strong>\u00a0was set up in <strong>1332<\/strong> by <strong>King Alfonso IV of Aragon<\/strong>, inside the <strong>Palazzo Regio<\/strong> of the Castello di Cagliari. It was the <strong>general archive for the <em>Regnum Sardiniae<\/em> <\/strong>and preserves all the documents produced by the <strong>Aragonese administration<\/strong>. Its history is linked to political and institutional events deriving from the chain of dominations on the island by the Catalan-Aragonese, the Spanish, Austrians and House of Savoy.<\/p>\n<p>A decisive change came in <strong>1847<\/strong>. Following the <strong>&#8220;merger&#8221;<\/strong> of Sardinia with the House of Savoy, the Archive\u2019s status changed from <strong><em>general<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0<em>provincial<\/em><\/strong>. This was followed by the need to preserve papers from abolished offices at the Archive: as a result, the <strong>documentation from the Spanish and House of Savoy period<\/strong> was grouped into a single archive known as <strong>Regi Archivi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Following the Unity of Italy, the institute in Cagliari fell under the control of the <strong>Interior Ministry<\/strong>, thus becoming, to all intents and purposes, a\u00a0<strong>State Archive<\/strong> with <strong>provincial jurisdiction<\/strong>. <strong>Since 1975,<\/strong> it has been an associated organisation of the\u00a0<strong>Ministry for Culture.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>building<\/strong> currently housing the Archive dates back to the\u00a0<strong>1920s<\/strong>. At that time, it was one of the first and esteemed examples of <strong>post-unification archival construction<\/strong>. From a style point of view, it falls within the parameters of <strong>eclectic architecture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The archival collections in <strong>this documentary heritage<\/strong> cover 9 km of shelving. The formation of the <strong>historical unit<\/strong> began under Aragonese occupation (<strong>1323<\/strong>), with the establishment of the <strong><em>Regnum Sardiniae<\/em><\/strong>. From the Unification of Italy onwards, the Archive increased its heritage with the <strong>periodical deposit of papers from the outlying public offices<\/strong>. Furthermore, it has a considerable collection of <strong>notary documents<\/strong>, more than 10,000 pieces, created from the <strong>XV century<\/strong> onwards.
