{"id":25621,"date":"2023-06-20T17:47:01","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T15:47:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/scala-di-san-giorgio-natural-monument\/"},"modified":"2023-06-23T14:53:06","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T12:53:06","slug":"scala-di-san-giorgio-natural-monument","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/scala-di-san-giorgio-natural-monument\/","title":{"rendered":"Scala di San Giorgio Natural Monument"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Scala di San Giorgio<\/strong> is a <strong>naturalistic site<\/strong> in the municipal area of <strong>Osini<\/strong>, in the sub-region of <strong>Ogliastra<\/strong>, in the province of <strong>Nuoro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The site is a <strong>Natural Monument established in 1994<\/strong> and covers a <strong>surface area of 3.68 hectares<\/strong>, at a height of between <strong>870 and 928 metres a.s.l<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe \u201c<strong>scala<\/strong>\u201d extends along the eastern walls of the <strong>&#8220;heel&#8221; of Osini<\/strong>, a wide <strong>Dolomite rock plateau<\/strong>, representing a <strong>natural passage<\/strong> between two valleys, to the north-east of the <strong>Rio Pardu<\/strong>, and to the south-west of the <strong>Flumineddu<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe crossing is a <strong>narrow gorge<\/strong>, cordoned off by <strong>high looming rock walls<\/strong> (up to 100 metres high), crossed by a narrow, <strong>paved road<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> &#8220;Sa Brecca &#8216;e Usala\u201d trekking path<\/strong> extends up towards the mountain leading to the <strong>belvedere<\/strong> overlooking the gorge and towards the valley.<\/p>\n<p>The geological <strong>origin<\/strong> of the gorge can be attributed to the vertical <strong>fracturing lines<\/strong> on the edge of the plateau. The rocks are part of a forest environment with a <strong>luscious wooded vegetation<\/strong> edging the base of the rocky walls. The rocks also have <strong>numerous cavities and ravines<\/strong> linked to the <strong>karstic processes<\/strong>, where the <strong>rupiculous fauna<\/strong> takes refuge.<\/p>\n<p>Its <strong>religious nature<\/strong> is linked to a <strong>miracle<\/strong> performed by the <strong>Archbishop of San Giorgio<\/strong>, the first person appointed to the ancient <strong>Diocese of Suelli<\/strong>, who opened the gorge in 1117 during a pastoral visit to Osini. On reaching the foot of the impenetrable mountain, thinking mostly of the poor travellers, he said a prayer and miraculously the mountain opened up a narrow gap which made the walk quicker and easier.
