{"id":25620,"date":"2023-06-20T17:47:01","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T15:47:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/fava-castle\/"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:52:22","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T07:52:22","slug":"fava-castle","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/fava-castle\/","title":{"rendered":"Fava Castle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Fava Castle<\/strong> sits in the <strong>centre of the town of Posada<\/strong>, perched on a limestone hill, not far from the sea.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> fortification date<\/strong> remains <strong>unknown<\/strong>. It was believed to have been built by the <strong>Giudici di Gallura in the XII century; <\/strong><strong>Eleonora d&#8217;Arborea then declared it her abode,<\/strong> when it fell into her possession. Indeed, the castle was always the subject of controversy between the two Giudicati.<\/p>\n<p>Following the <strong>death of Nino Visconti<\/strong>, <strong>last king of Gallura, in the XIV century, it fell under the Republic of Pisa<\/strong>. <strong>It ended up in the hands of the Aragonese around 1380 and then fell back under the Sardinian alliance with Brancaleone Doria<\/strong>. With the <strong>downfall of the Giudicato of Arborea, Posada<\/strong> was entrusted to the Carr\u00f2z family and <strong>became a barony in 1431<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>name &#8220;della Fava\u201d (of the Broad bean)<\/strong> appears in a document of the House of Pisa in 1275 and a nautical document from 1311.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Legend<\/strong> has it that in 1300, a fleet of Turks landed on the island\u2019s coast and held Posada under siege, in an attempt to conquer it and starve it of provisions. The inhabitants made a pigeon eat the last of their remaining broad beans and sent it towards the Turks\u2019 encampment who, on seeing its stomach full of food, overestimated the resources of the inhabitants and gave up the siege.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>castle of Posada<\/strong>, in its current state, presents a <strong>quadrangular city wall<\/strong> inside which we can find <strong>the remains of a square tower over three floors<\/strong>, a crenellated coping and a series of well-preserved cisterns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Initially, the castle was surrounded by several city walls<\/strong>, with wall walks and protected by merlons. The tower above can be accessed through doors.
