{"id":25588,"date":"2023-06-16T17:34:48","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T15:34:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/santa-maria-assunta-cathedral\/"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:52:38","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T07:52:38","slug":"santa-maria-assunta-cathedral","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/santa-maria-assunta-cathedral\/","title":{"rendered":"Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The cathedral in the <strong>old town centre<\/strong> sits in a large square elevated above street level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Records<\/strong> of the cathedral exist as far back as <strong>1131<\/strong>, however the shapes and sizes of the original building differ from its current-day appearance. The <strong>first structure<\/strong> was probably arranged around three naves, in Romanesque style; <strong>altered in 1228<\/strong> on the wishes of the archbishop Torgotorio de Muru, due to the serious damage it had incurred as a result of continuous sacking and fires caused by the troops of the giudice di Cagliari. The year 1228 is also recorded on the bronze shutters with <strong>leonine protomes<\/strong> produced by the <strong>craftsman Placentinus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the layout from the XIII century was not its definitive one. The following century, the transept with Gothic style chapels were built. Its <strong>current-day appearance<\/strong> was only finalised with the work carried out in the <strong>XVIII century<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The sloping <strong>facade<\/strong> is split into two rows by the fine cornice: in the lower one, the <strong>portal<\/strong> opens out crowned by columns and fragmented gable, while on the upper row, a large <strong>monofora<\/strong> with curvilinear gable and two blind <strong>niches<\/strong> opens out. The <strong>Latin cross<\/strong> layout is arranged on a <strong>single nave<\/strong> overlooked by three <strong>chapels<\/strong> each side, <strong>a transept<\/strong> covered by an <strong>octagonal<\/strong> cupola, <strong>raised presbytery<\/strong> with marble balustrade and quadrangular <strong>apse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast with the facade which almost appears to be unfinished, the interior is elaborately <strong>decorated<\/strong>: there are four <strong>Evangelists<\/strong> are depicted in the cupola\u2019s pendentive shutters, while the blessing <strong>Christ<\/strong> is depicted in the nave\u2019s vault.
