{"id":25565,"date":"2023-06-15T17:21:07","date_gmt":"2023-06-15T15:21:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/church-of-santa-maria-del-regno-and-retablo-di-ardara\/"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:52:50","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T07:52:50","slug":"church-of-santa-maria-del-regno-and-retablo-di-ardara","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/church-of-santa-maria-del-regno-and-retablo-di-ardara\/","title":{"rendered":"Church of Santa Maria del Regno and Retablo di Ardara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The church of Santa Maria del Regno, built on a hill in the town centre, originally acted as the <strong>palatine chapel<\/strong> to the castle of the <strong>Judicate of Logudoro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The palatine chapel was erected on the request of Donna Giorgia, sister to Gonario I of Torres. <strong>It was built by a workforce from the Pisa school<\/strong>, and its consecration <strong>date<\/strong>, 7 May <strong>1107<\/strong>, appears on an inscription originally positioned on the high altar and nowadays to the right of the presbytery.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>facade<\/strong> with salients crowned with <strong>suspended arches<\/strong> is divided into five half-pilaster transoms; the architrave entrance and overhead double-arched window can be found in the central transom.<\/p>\n<p>The square-plan<strong> bell tower<\/strong> is truncated and rounded off by a double bell gable.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>interior<\/strong> presents two sets of columns in<strong> three naves<\/strong>, covered by wooden trusses and cross vaults; it houses works of art which contrast with the austere <strong>black trachyte<\/strong> stone used in its construction.<\/p>\n<p>Its <strong>longitudinal layout<\/strong> concludes with the <strong>apse<\/strong> housing the <em>altarpiece<\/em> on the high altar, a polyptych created in 1515 by <strong>Giovanni Muru<\/strong>. <strong>The thirty-one painted tables of the upper altarpiece<\/strong> represent scenes from the life of Mary and the depiction of saints and prophets. The wooden sculpture of Nostra Signora del Regno sits in a niche at the centre of the large polyptych.
