{"id":25564,"date":"2023-06-14T18:03:13","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T16:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/altopiano-di-golgo\/"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:52:51","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T07:52:51","slug":"altopiano-di-golgo","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/altopiano-di-golgo\/","title":{"rendered":"Altopiano di Golgo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Altopiano del Golgo<\/strong>\u00a0can be found in the municipal area of <strong>Baunei<\/strong>, in the magnificent province of\u00a0<strong>Ogliastra<\/strong>. This <strong>basaltic plateau<\/strong> offers a unique landscape with a wealth of invaluable nature and archaeology. It is also the starting point for a number of picturesque paths and walks.<\/p>\n<p>The site is located right inside the <strong>Supramonte di Baunei<\/strong>, north of the small mountain village. It is an area of natural beauty where <strong>basaltic rock<\/strong> meets with <strong>limestone<\/strong>, covered in <strong>juniper bushes<\/strong>, <strong>holm oak<\/strong> and other species of <strong>Mediterranean scrub<\/strong>. The area is also well known for being home to different species of <strong>wild animals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong> \u201cV<\/strong><strong>oragine del Golgo\u201d (Chasm of Golgo), a natural monument <\/strong>which goes by the name of <strong>Su Sterru<\/strong> or <strong>S\u2019isterru<\/strong>, meaning \u201ccavity\u201d or \u201csinkhole\u201d can also be found on the plateau.<br \/>\nThe chasm is currently the <strong>deepest<\/strong> single-span chasm in <strong>Europe<\/strong>. The opening stands at a height of <strong>approx. 380 m a.s.l.<\/strong> and its deepest point sits at a depth of <strong>110 m a.s.l<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The first part of the cavity, for a stretch of around 26 m is dominated by <strong>basaltic rock<\/strong>, deriving from cooled volcanic lava. It then continues through <strong>carbonic rock<\/strong> which is typical of the <strong>Gulf of Orosei<\/strong>. The chasm widens at this stretch to a diameter of around <strong>25 m<\/strong> then opens up at the bottom in a chamber with a breadth of around <strong>40 metres<\/strong>.<br \/>\nSpeleology enthusiasts will find unusual features in this formation. Indeed, its origin can be explained over several stages linked to <strong>karstic phenomena,<\/strong> which smoothed the cavity between the <strong>carbonic rocks <\/strong>in the Mesozoic era. This was followed by <strong>crumbling phenomena<\/strong> of the <strong>basaltic rock <\/strong>in the Plio-Pleistocene period<strong>,<\/strong> which revealed the entrance to the chasm at the top.<\/p>\n<p>Another characteristic element in the area, on the eastern side of \u201c<strong>Baccu Dolcolce<\/strong>\u201d, is the \u201c<strong>Maschera di Pietra<\/strong>\u201d (Stone Mask), also known as \u201c<strong>Faccia Litica<\/strong>\u201d (Lithic Face).<\/p>\n<p>It is a basaltic wall standing about 10 m high which, when observed from a particular point on the pathway above, reveals the features of a\u00a0<strong>human face<\/strong>, with\u00a0<strong>eyes<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>nose<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>lips<\/strong>.
