{"id":25561,"date":"2023-06-14T17:58:38","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T15:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/historical-neighbourhood-of-castello\/"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:52:45","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T07:52:45","slug":"historical-neighbourhood-of-castello","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/historical-neighbourhood-of-castello\/","title":{"rendered":"Historical neighbourhood of Castello"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Located in an elevated position above the city and the gulf, Castello is the <strong>oldest<\/strong> neighbourhood in Cagliari, founded by the <strong>House of Pisa<\/strong> in the XIII century.<\/p>\n<p>In 1217, the<strong> Giudicessa di C\u00e0lari (Judge\/Queen of Cagliari)<\/strong> informed Pope Honorius III of being forced to concede a hill to the House of Pisa where they built a well defended castle.<\/p>\n<p>In 1258, the House of Pisa destroyed Santa Igia, located near the pond of Santa Gilla and capital of the C\u00e0lari giudicato, and replaced its ruling body.<\/p>\n<p>In the XIV century, this fortified centre complete with places of power and worship passed into the hands of the <strong>Aragonese<\/strong>; under the\u00a0<strong>Piedmont <\/strong>domination (XVIII-XIX century), the centre was further <strong>extended<\/strong> as were the defensive walls.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>ancient Medieval gates,<\/strong> porta Cristina and the torre dell\u2019Elefante, provide access to the neighbourhood, while the walls run the full length of the perimeter.<\/p>\n<p>The neighbourhood has narrow lanes, stairways and small squares offering <strong>characteristic glimpses<\/strong> and often <strong>panoramic<\/strong> views over the city. Places worth mentioning include the S. M.
