{"id":25335,"date":"2023-05-18T17:04:55","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T15:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/sella-del-diavolo\/"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:52:22","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T07:52:22","slug":"sella-del-diavolo","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/sella-del-diavolo\/","title":{"rendered":"Sella del Diavolo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Sella del Diavolo<\/strong> is a <strong>promontory<\/strong> stretching along the centre of the <strong>Gulf of Cagliari<\/strong>, in southern <strong>Sardinia<\/strong>, in the island\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>The unmistakable profile of the promontory is one of the <strong>city of Cagliari\u2019s<\/strong> distinctive <strong>features<\/strong> and its coastline, the <strong>Poetto beach<\/strong>. The <strong>Sella<\/strong> stands at the centre of the Gulf representing a continuation towards the sea of the <strong>Colle di Sant\u2019Elia<\/strong>, one of the seven hills on which the city was built.<\/p>\n<p>From a <strong>geological<\/strong> point of view, the promontory <strong>rocks<\/strong> are <strong>chalky<\/strong>, with a typical structure of the other hills. They are of <strong>antique marine origin<\/strong>, made up mostly of collections of <strong>shells and other fossils<\/strong> from <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>Miocene era<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The promontory is covered in a<strong> thick vegetation<\/strong> and we can see examples of <strong>the European fan palm<\/strong>, <strong>juniper<\/strong>, <strong>wild olive<\/strong>, <strong>Mastic tree<\/strong> and <strong>spurge<\/strong>. Furthermore, the Sella is a <em><strong>habitat<\/strong><\/em> for different <strong>rare birds<\/strong>, like the <strong>peregrine falcon<\/strong>, <strong>kestrel<\/strong> and <strong>Sardinian partridge<\/strong>. <strong>Wolves<\/strong> and <strong>wild rabbits<\/strong> live among its shrubs and bushes.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to its <strong>naturalness<\/strong>, the area attracts <strong>excursionists<\/strong> who can enjoy the experience of being in contact with the <strong>wild nature<\/strong> just a few kilometres from the city centre.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the site is of <strong>archaeological importance<\/strong>. Indeed, the <strong>natural grottoes<\/strong> around the <strong>Capo Sant\u2019Elia<\/strong> unveiled traces of inhabitants as early as <strong>Neolithic times<\/strong>. At the highest point, we find the ruins of a <strong>Punic temple<\/strong> dedicated to <strong>Astarte<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The promontory offers unique and picturesque scenery. This is why, as <strong>legend has it,<\/strong> and from which its name originates, the <strong>celestial troops<\/strong> and<strong>fallen angels<\/strong> of <strong>Lucifer<\/strong>, fought to <strong>dominate the Gulf<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe battle takes place in the skies above the coast of Cagliari and is won by the army of angels led by the <strong>Archangel Michael<\/strong>, while <strong>Lucifer<\/strong> during the battle loses the saddle of his mount that falls on the promontory giving it its current shape.
