Indeed, the <strong>original building<\/strong> dates back to the<strong> V-VI centuries<\/strong>, constructed on a place where, according to tradition, <strong>the saint was martyred<\/strong>. The first building, home to the <strong>diocese of Sulcis<\/strong>, had to be erected on a <strong>Greek cross<\/strong> structure, with dome at the intersection of the arms and barrel vaulted. The martyrium also had an<strong> underground sanctuary<\/strong>, where the sarcophagus was received with the saint\u2019s remains.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>1089,<\/strong> the temple was donated by <strong>Costantino de Lacon-Gunale<\/strong>, a magistrate of Cagliari, to the <strong>Vittorini monks<\/strong> of Marseilles. They transformed the Greek layout into a Latin one by enlarging the central nave and introducing a large <strong>apse<\/strong>. The brickwork shows that a further <strong>extension<\/strong> was made between the XVII and the<strong> XVIII century<\/strong>, when the auditorium and the current <strong>facade<\/strong> were lengthened; while the <strong>bell tower<\/strong> with square plan, complete with <strong>clock<\/strong> was added by the Town Council in the nineteenth century.<\/p>\n<p>The inside of the basilica, mostly bare and left with exposed ashlars, preserves the wooden simulacrums of<em> Saint Lucy<\/em>, <em>the Risen Christ<\/em>, <em>Our Lady of Sorrows<\/em>, <em>Our Lady of Carmel<\/em> and <em>Saint Antiochus<\/em>.
