The earliest mention of the building, <strong>built in Gothic-Catalan style<\/strong> dates back to the XIV century; however, over time, a number of structural changes and updates have been made to the building.<\/p>\n<p>The current-day <strong>facade<\/strong> is the result of a renovation project by the architect <strong>Gaetano Cima<\/strong>, <strong>done in Neoclassic style<\/strong> in the <strong>XIX century<\/strong>. The front features tall, smooth <strong>semi-columns<\/strong> with <strong>Corinthian capitals<\/strong> supporting the <strong>gable<\/strong> and enclosing the <strong>large door<\/strong> topped by a large semi-circular window; the square-plan <strong>bell tower<\/strong> from the Gothic-Catalan period stands to the left, completed in <strong>1442<\/strong> as indicated in the commemorative plaque at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>The inside houses a <strong>single nave<\/strong> off of which are five <strong>chapels<\/strong> each side, rib cross vaulted, and the raised <strong>presbytery<\/strong> covered by a starry-cross vault.<\/p>\n<p>The chapel at the bottom of the bell tower is home to the sculptural assembly of the <em><strong>Mourned<\/strong><\/em>, dating back to the <strong>XV century<\/strong> and produced in painted <strong>terracotta<\/strong>; the contemporary wooden assembly of the <em><strong>Crucifix and the Pie Donne <\/strong><\/em> can be found on the polychrome marble altar, while the marble <strong>high altar<\/strong> from the XVIII century can be attributed to <strong>Giovanni Battista Franco<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":4743,"template":"","tipologia":[979],"categoria":[1023],"tematica":[1030],"class_list":["post-25317","place","type-place","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipologia-chiesa-en","categoria-architectural-asset","tematica-architecture"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Church of San Giacomo - Idese<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/church-of-san-giacomo\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_GB\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Church of San Giacomo - Idese\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"The church overlooks the piazza of the same name in the Villanova neighbourhood; the piazza is also overlooked by the Holy Cross and Purging Souls Oratory.
