{"id":25316,"date":"2023-05-18T17:04:51","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T15:04:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/place\/church-of-san-domenico\/"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:52:39","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T07:52:39","slug":"church-of-san-domenico","status":"publish","type":"place","link":"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/church-of-san-domenico\/","title":{"rendered":"Church of San Domenico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The church can be found in the <strong>Villanova<\/strong> neighbourhood, at the top of a vast <strong>staircase<\/strong> overlooking the piazza of the same name.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>air raids<\/strong> in <strong>1943<\/strong> seriously damaged the <strong>ancient Gothic-Catalan church<\/strong> dating back to the <strong>XV-XVI centuries<\/strong>, built on the wishes of the <strong>Dominican monks<\/strong> on the spot of the ancient Benedictine church of Sant\u2019Anna.<\/p>\n<p>The current-day building was designed by the architect <strong>Raffaello Fagnoni<\/strong> and built between <strong>1952<\/strong> and <strong>1954<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On the harsh <strong>facade<\/strong>, produced in white limestone from Bonaria are three narrow <strong>portals<\/strong> that open up and are overhung by a <strong>ribbon window<\/strong> and flat end plate. It has a <strong>single-nave<\/strong> layout with <strong>presbytery<\/strong>, and is articulated by reinforced concrete <strong>ribs<\/strong> that reflect the <strong>Gothic architectural features <\/strong> of the previous church.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous pieces of furniture that were in the church have been lost; however, some of the <strong>canvases<\/strong> of the <strong>Rosary altarpiece<\/strong> from the XVII century have been saved: the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Coronation of the Virgin, the Crucification and the Resurrection.<\/p>\n<p>Remaining intact from the <strong>ancient church<\/strong>, known as the lower church, is the <strong>chapel of the Madonna of the Holy Rosary<\/strong> which is a part of the crypt in the current-day church and home to the board with the <strong>Madonna with Child<\/strong> by Alvaro Pirez, currently at  <a href=\"https:\/\/idese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/place\/cagliaris-national-picture-gallery\/\">Cagliari\u2019s National Picture Gallery<\/a>, and the quadrangular <strong>cloister<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Western <\/strong>and<strong> Southern<\/strong> sides of the cloister, <strong>date back to the first half of the XV century<\/strong>, and have Late Gothic shapes and decorations. They feature a series of gabled elevation ribbed cross vaults with delicately decorated key jewels and hanging capitals, whose decorative repertoire includes phyto-animal shaped subjects.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>north <\/strong>and<strong> eastern<\/strong> sides, on the other hand, and the adjacent chapels,  date back to the <strong>late Renaissance reconstruction<\/strong> in 1598, on the wishes of Philip II of Spain. The <strong>eastern side<\/strong> stretches across two rows of round arches with wooden vaults.
